What Is a Worm wheel?
A worm wheel is a gear consisting of a helically threaded shaft that meshes with and drives the gear. A worm wheel is an old-fashioned gear, a version of one of six simple machines. Basically, a worm wheel is a screw that interfaces with a screw that looks like standard spur gear, with slightly angled and curved teeth.
How Worm wheels Work
An electric motor or engine applies rotational power via to the worm. The worm rotates against the wheel, and the screw face pushes on the teeth of the wheel. The wheel is pushed against the load.

We manufacture gears in a variety of materials and size ranges for many industries from small to large. We use state-of-the-art technology, not only in the manufacturing process, but also in quality control. Our engineers know the end result is as good as the stock they started with, so we machine our own stock to maintain the highest quality standards.
Worm Gear Lubrication
The main problem with a worm gear is how it transmits power. This is both a blessing and a curse. If standard helical gears are used, the helical motion allows a substantial reduction in the required space in a relatively small space.
This helical motion also leads to an incredibly problematic condition, becoming the dominant mode of power transmission. This is commonly referred to as sliding friction or sliding wear.
Worm Gear Uses
Worm gears can achieve huge reduction ratios effortlessly – just add circumference to the wheel. So you can use it to greatly increase torque or drastically reduce speed. Multiple reductions of conventional gear sets are often required to achieve the same level of reduction as a single worm gear—meaning the user of a worm gear has fewer moving parts and fewer failure locations.
Metallurgy of Worm Gears
The most common worm gears are made of brass wheels and steel worms. This is because brass wheels are usually easier to replace than the worm itself. The wheel is made of brass because it was designed to be sacrificial.
With the two surfaces in contact, the worm does not wear out because the wheel is softer, so most of the wear occurs on the wheel. Oil analysis reports of this type almost always show some level of copper and a small amount of iron – a result of the sacrificial wheel.
There are several reasons to choose a worm gear over a standard gear.
The first is a high reduction ratio. Worm gears can achieve huge reduction ratios with little effort – all that has to be done is increase the circumference of the wheel. So you can use it to greatly increase torque or drastically reduce speed. Multiple reductions of conventional gear sets are often required to achieve the same level of reduction as a single worm gear—meaning the user of a worm gear has fewer moving parts and fewer failure locations.
The second reason to use a worm gear is the inability to reverse the direction of power. Because of the friction between the worm and the wheel, it is almost impossible for a wheel to initiate the worm to move with applied force.
A worm gear set is a set of gears consisting of a worm (pinion) and a worm-wheel (worm gear), often used when a high ratio is required and space is limited.
Worm gears are used when large reduction ratios are required between disjoint intersecting shafts. Basic helical gears can be used, but the power that can be transmitted is low. A worm drive consists of a large diameter worm gear and a worm screw that meshes with teeth on the periphery of the worm gear. The worm is like a screw and the worm wheel is like part of a nut. When the worm rotates, the worm wheel rotates due to the helix-like action of the worm. The size of the worm gear set is generally determined according to the center distance between the worm and the worm gear.
